Instruction Covered in Beginning Mandolin Classes
- Basic technique of holding and fingering instrument. Holding the pick.
- Different types of picks.
- Reading tabliture or formal music whichever you prefer…..Tabliture is the easiest.
- Strumming patterns. How to “Chop” on the mandolin for backing up another instrument.
- Timing/rhythm: How to stay in time with a set beat.
- Back up and lead playing during jam/group class. (If you choose to attend jam.)
- Chords patterns and progressions.
- Different mandolin styles: Monroe Style, Frank Wakefield Style and others. Classical if desired.
- Tone is discussed and how to tremolo.
TEACHING LOCATIONS and PRICING:
- Kim Teaches Mandolin in Roanoke Rapids NC five days a week Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 6:30. lesson cost in Roanoke Rapids is $25.00 a 45 minute session. Students pay $25.00 a week for Jam Week and can attend every day that week if they choose.
- Kim Teaches Mandolin in Tarboro NC every Wednesday morning and every other Saturday at the Blount-Bridgers House 130 Bridgers Street Tarboro NC. Wednesday sessions are $30.00 a 45 minute session or $30.0 for a class/group lesson lasting about 2 hours. Saturday sessions are 45 minutes for a cost of $40 per session. Some jam classes offered in Tarboro upon a to be announced availability.
In Roanoke Rapids:
Private lessons are offered once a week for 45 minutes based on your schedule. Jam class is also offered for free every Thursday from 4:00pm to 6:30 pm. This is included in your monthly lesson cost of $25.00 a week.
The last full week of each month is Jam Week. We jam every day from 4:00pm to 6:30. If a student is not ready to jam yet, this week is optional until they feel ready to participate. Private lessons for new students can be scheduled during this week but usually no private lessons are scheduled for more advanced players.
If a Tarboro student wants to drive to Roanoke Rapids to Jam it is free. If a Roanoke Rapids student drives to Tarboro for Jam is also free.
Lessons are for any age. Children under the age of 6 or 7 should be accompanied by an adult so the adult can help them during the week for practice. Children under the age of 12 are given a practice check off sheet. Every time they practice 15 minutes they can put a check on their calendar. Four checks will give the student a choice of a prize from Ms. Kim’s “Crazy Prize Box”. No limit on how many checks a child can accumulate per week.
Mandolins can be rented weekly if you prefer until you can buy your own. Or Kim can help you find one at a fair price.
If more than one person from a family under the same roof takes a lesson there is a discount! We encourage family involvement and would like to see family members learning and playing together.
